Week 3
Maths Task 3 : Please see the bottom of this page
English Task 3:
I would like you to imagine that you are spending a lovely, sunny day at the beach when you find this…

What is written on the paper inside? I would like you to write something that could be sent as a message in a bottle. Is it a letter? Instructions on how to find treasure? Someone asking for help? Where did it come from? How long has it been in the water?
You might choose to add a drawing like a map or a photograph. You could even find out how to make the paper you are writing on look old. Don’t forget to post the contents of your bottle on the Padlet!

Science Task
Your task is to take a Science Selfie: a photo showing you taking part in some aspect of science. Share your selfie to the Padlet and comment explaining what element of science you are doing.
You can choose any aspect of science that interests you. If you need some inspiration there are some great ideas on this website: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html and there are a few attachments here that may be of use.
We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

English Task 2:
Here is a picture puzzle to help you to learn your spellings. Can you work out which picture matches each spelling? Hint: they all include the letters wa and war.
Find the answers in week one of the spelling list below.
Now have a go at writing some silly sentences which include your spellings. How many spellings can you fit into one sentence?
Maths Task 2:
Recognise a half
Let’s start by watching this episode of Numberjacks on YouTube to help you answer the questions below:
What is a half?
Have you ever split something in half to share with someone? What things did you see in the video that had been halved?
When have you ever heard about a half?
How would you know if something is a half?
How many halves make a whole?
Let’s try…

English tasks: Task 1 Read the extract from ‘The Hodgeheg’ and answer the questions below:

- Who is the author of this story?
- Do you think this story is set in the town or countryside? Why?
- Read the second paragraph. Do you think the waiting humans can see Max? Why?
- Read the third paragraph. Do you think Max has used a pelican crossing before? How do you know?
- Find the word ‘ bunch’ in the text. What does ‘bunch’ mean? Can you use the word in a sentence?
- What two colours are the men on the pelican crossing?
- What do hedgehogs do when they are scared?
- Use a crayon or a highlighter to find all of the verbs (‘doing’/action words) in the text.
- In the text it says ‘he dodged about in a forest of legs’. What picture does that put in your mind? Can you draw it?
- Make a list of some of the words you don’t know the meaning of. Use a dictionary (there are lots online if you don’t have one) to find their meanings and write them down.
Maths tasks:
Task 1 – We are going to start learning about Mrs Nicholls’ favourite area of Maths – Fractions! Task 1 – finding equal parts!
Visit the page https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/, go into ‘Week 1’, ‘Lesson 1 – ‘Make equal parts’.

Watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet linked below when prompted.
Can you find or make equal parts of shapes or objects around your home? Share them on the padlet!
Spelling tasks:
Here is the spelling list for this half term. You may choose to continue learning and testing spellings each week, as we would during normal term time. However, you may choose to learn these spellings in a more informal way. We will be setting some suggested spelling activities each week but I have included links to various fun and beneficial spelling activities below.
If your child was working within a phonics phase and receiving daily interventions to support them in learning their phonics, they will benefit from frequent revision of sounds from Phase 3 and Phase 5. This would include reading the individual sounds, reading words which include these sounds and spelling words which include these sounds. I have included links to the sound mats for each phase. I would also encourage you to try the Nessy Reading and Spelling website which supports your child’s reading and spelling at their level. If you have trouble logging on, please contact us via email.
Maths Task 3 – Last time we learnt that ‘two halves make a whole’, to be halves ‘both parts have to be equal’.
In today’s activity we are going to find half of some more shapes and also find half of amounts (you might recognise this from when we made two equal groups last term).
We are also going to see how we write fractions like ‘half’ in maths.
Visit the page https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/, go into ‘Week 1’, ‘Lesson 2 – ‘Recognise a half’.

Watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet linked below when prompted.
If you want to do more finding half of amounts you can also complete Lesson 3 using the link to White Rose Maths above.
Print out the shape sheet or just draw and cut out some shapes of your own. Fold each shape carefully and cut along the fold to make two pieces. Can you fold and cut some shapes into two equal pieces? Can you fold and cut some shapes into two unequal pieces?
