EYS/KS1 problem:
Icing biscuits
*You might like to draw (or make?) the biscuits to help you solve this problem.*
Edward decorated 20 biscuits to take to a party.
He lined them up and put icing on every second biscuit.
Then he put a cherry on every third biscuit.
Then he put a chocolate button on every fourth biscuit.
So there was nothing on the first biscuit.
How many other biscuits had no decoration? Did any biscuits get all three decorations?

***Solution!***

Biscuits 1, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 had no decoration on. What do you notice about those numbers?

Biscuit 12 had all three decorations on. This is because 12 is in the 2, 3 and 4 times tables!

KS2 problem:
Button up!
I have a jacket which has four buttons.
Sometimes, I do the buttons up starting with the top button. Sometimes, I start somewhere else.
How many different ways of buttoning it up can you find?
Look back at the number of different ways you found for buttoning up four buttons.
Can you predict the number of ways of buttoning up a coat with five buttons?

Six buttons …?

***Solution!***

You need an organised and systematic way of working to make sure that you find all the different ways.

Start with all the ways when you start with the first button, then all the ways you start with the second button etc.

In total there are 6 ways for each so 6×4=24.

So there are 24 ways of buttoning up the coat.

Here are all the ways (if you number the buttons 1, 2, 3, 4 this helps):

1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432, 2134, 2143, 2431, 2413, 2314, 1341, 3124, 3142, 3412, 3421, 3241, 3214, 4321, 4312, 4213, 4231, 4123, 4132

Can you now use the same method now to find the number of ways for 5 or 6 buttons?
