Line symmetry

Today the Year 2 children were learning about line symmetry. We focused on vertical symmetry – we learned that symmetrical shapes look the same on each side! We folded shapes and used mirrors to explore symmetry.

Can you find any symmetrical shapes around your house?

Book Week – the final chapter!

This week, the school has been celebrating Book Week with a focus on children’s authors. The Kingfishers have been learning about Roald Dahl and the Swifts have been learning about David Walliams.

Today we came together as a year group to discuss and compare our authors. Both classes managed to name more than 14 books by their author! How many can you name? We discussed our favourite books by the author and gave reasons.

We spotted that there are a lot of similarities between David Walliams and Roald Dahl. The children noticed that they both have “horrid people” in them and they both have some books that are illustrated by Quentin Blake. They have both written funny and engaging book for children.

Year 2 SATs Information Evening

SATS-1

You should all have received a letter with information regarding our Year 2 SATs Information Evening on Wednesday 1st April.

Please return the reply slip as soon as possible to give us time to make the arrangements for the meeting.

If you have any queries in the meantime please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Hip-hip-array!

This week in Maths we are learning about multiplication using arrays. We started by looking at arrays in real life. Can you find arrays in real life? If you can – take a photo and add to the comments! Can you also write the multiplication sentence to describe it? We will give a success star to anyone that can find one!

*Update – on the fabulous advice of Miss Wilson we have added a Padlet to add your lovely arrays to!*

This delicious box of chocolates below shows a 6 x 5 array. 6 x 5 = 30.

Money money money…

child-counting-money-008

In Maths in Year 2 we are currently learning all about money: the value of coins and notes, counting money and finding the total/difference.

We would really appreciate it if you could support us in ensuring your child is familiar with money. Give them opportunities to handle coins and notes, count coins and notes (maybe birthday/Christmas money, or money from the tooth fairy?) and talk to them about it. Maybe take a trip to the shop and let them work out how much money they need to purchase something?

In today’s digital world we are using less and less physical money (I was shocked to find out that my 2-year old knew how to use contactless technology when we were shopping last week!) but it is still important for children to understand the value of notes and coins, and is still currently assessed in the National Curriculum.

Please speak to one of the Year 2 team for any more ideas on how your child could be supported in this area. Here are some useful apps that could also support your child’s learning:

Thank you for your continued support!

Adding 2 and 1-digit numbers

This week Year 2 continue their learning about addition and subtraction. We are now moving onto adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number, such as 34 + 5 = 39 or 46 + 6 = 52.

We are adding mentally but also with the support of an empty number line!

See the examples in the photograph below. We had to remember to start with the larger number, count on in jumps of one and be very accurate.

We will refine and introduce different methods of addition and subtraction as the children become more confident.

Why not try some examples like the ones below at home?
